Laptops and desktops that can run SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS is fussy: it runs only on Windows, wants 32 GB of memory and a proper graphics card, and doesn’t run on Macs. Most laptops fail at least one of those. Here are the ones that don’t.

This week’s list

Windows, not Home edition

SOLIDWORKS needs Windows 11, but not the Home edition, on an Intel or AMD processor. Macs and Snapdragon laptops are out.

32 GB of memory

The recommended amount. With 16 GB, bigger assemblies slow down or stall.

A graphics card

SOLIDWORKS certifies workstation graphics cards. NVIDIA GeForce cards like those below run student coursework well but aren’t on the certified list.

Watch out for

  1. Check the Windows editionIf a laptop comes with Windows 11 Home, you’ll need Pro or Education. Many universities give students Windows Education free.
  2. Weight and batteryGraphics cards add weight and drain batteries. A desktop gives more power for the money if you don’t need to carry it.
  3. Close, but not quiteLaptops with an NVIDIA card but 16 GB, or 32 GB but no graphics card, are left out. They manage small parts and struggle with big assemblies.

Before you buy: ask your department. Many universities run SOLIDWORKS on their own computers or through a virtual desktop, and give students the licence free.

Quick questions

Can I run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac?

Only inside Windows through an app such as Parallels Desktop, which SOLIDWORKS doesn’t officially support. For a course that uses it every week, choose Windows.

Laptop or desktop?

A desktop gives you more for the money and runs cooler. A laptop matters if you need SOLIDWORKS in lectures or labs.
